The Most Unexpected Acoustic Guitar Performance | The Showhawk Duo | TEDxKlagenfurt

Music works a lot like language does — except instead of words and ideas, it expresses emotions and intent. It also gives us an oxytocin boost, which plays an important role in increasing bonding and trust between people. The Showhawk Duo bonded TEDxKlagenfurt’s audience with their spectacular approach to playing the guitar. Listen to the magic they created on stage with their version of Insomnia — I cant get no sleep, Tiesto’s Adagio For Strings or the most unexpected thing you can expect on a guitar Bohemian Rhapsody. Young British guitarists Mikhail Asanovic and Jake Wright, together known as The Showhawk Duo, started out as buskers and have since gone on to play all over the globe. They have appeared on BBC Radio 1 on the Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show, they performed for the LAD Bible and BBC Radio Bristol. They played at the UKs large festivals including the Main Stage at Bestival, Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness, Somersault and more. International performances include F1 Grand Prix in Singapore, Seychelles, club tours in Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands and a 20 — date residency at Pacha in Ibiza. A Beatbox Concerto | Tom Thum

You may wonder how a beatboxer and an orchestra can work together?

Acclaimed beatboxer Tom Thum and classical powerhouse Gordon Hamilton show you exactly how, as they showcase their world renowned concerto for beatbox and orchestra, Thum Prints.

Together with The Bombay Chamber Orchestra, they deliver a never before seen sneak peak into this globe trotting symphonic project. At first glance, you’d struggle to find a greater example of artistic polar opposites, yet anyone lucky enough to have witnessed this creative alliance would agree that the two compliment each other perfectly.
Executing performances with some of the worlds most renowned orchestras, such as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic, Cologne’s WDR Funkhausorchester, Florida’s Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Nürnberg Symphoniker, and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to name a few, the pair have been turning concert halls on their heads and continuing to wow audiences with this remarkable collaboration.

Simply titled, ‘Thum Prints’ this boundary pushing symphony comprises mainly of original compositions, wholly written by Tom and Gordon. Bridged by comedic interludes, it has the ability to be programmed as a full 60 minute show, or as a 20 minute concerto in a longer symphonic program. Extreme Exoplanet Systems | Jason Steffen | TEDxUNLV

There are many kinds of planets and planetary systems that we knew nothing about just 20 years ago. Many of these planets and systems have gone through significant disruption events, have exotic dynamical histories, strange orbits. Others have been ejected completely from their systems and are wandering alone among the stars. Jason Steffen discusses our solar system and earth in the context of these extrasolar counterparts and looks at the fates we have thus far avoided.

As assistant professor of physics at UNLV Dr. Jason Steffen studies the characteristics of planets that are orbiting distant stars. He has served as a member of NASA’s Kepler mission for nearly ten years and co-chairs the working group that investigates the dynamical properties of these extrasolar systems. Steffen and his collaborators have discovered nearly 1000 planets orbiting distant stars and identified several thousand new planet candidates.

Prior to this, Steffen was a Lindheimer Fellow at Northwestern University and a Brinson Fellow in particle astrophysics at Fermilab where, in addition to work in exoplanets, he studied dark matter and dark energy. Steffen has authored, or co-authored over 60 papers which have been cited over 8000 times in the scholarly literature.

Steffen’s most famous papers, quite unrelated to either exoplanets or dark matter, are on the optimum method to board passengers onto airplanes (the currently undefeated «Steffen Method»).

The Science of Love | John Gottman | TEDxVeniceBeach

World-renowned relationship expert John Gottman set forth to understand why relationships don’t work, but for that he needed to first understand relationships scientifically. Gottman then measured the behavior, perception and physiology of couples over time to understand how love works. With that he was able to create equations for love and discern the mathematical dynamics of love. His science was able to predict with a 90% accuracy whether relationships would last or not. Finally, his studies conclude that the magic of love requires calm and commitment, which in the end makes the magic of great love a bit less of a mystery.

John Gottman speaks about how his scientific research has now created a new understanding of all love relationships (heterosexual and same-sex), across the entire life span. He describes the new LOVE EQUATIONS, and the magic trio of calm, trust, and commitment. For more, visit The Gottman Institute at www.gottman.com/. World-renowned for his work on marital stability and divorce prediction, Dr. John Gottman has conducted 40 years of breakthrough research with thousands of couples. He is the author of over 200 published academic articles and author or co-author of more than 40 books, including The New York Times bestseller The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.

Dr. Gottman’s media appearances include Good Morning America, Today, CBS Morning News, and Oprah, as well articles in The New York Times, Redbook, Glamour, Woman’s Day, People, Self, and Psychology Today. Co-founder of The Gottman Institute with his wife, Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman, John is a Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Washington where he founded ”The Love Lab" at which much of his research on couples interactions was conducted. What is love? A journey through the heart | Mia Hansson | TEDxDouglas

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is love indeed?

Born to parents from two different continents, Mia grew up and worked in Europe, Africa and South East Asia. Even while helping her nuclear physicist father and geneticist mother at work, Mia had a hunch that there was more to life than science alone. Obsessed with finding the answer to the question of love she travelled through Tibet, studied jungle survival with Bruce Parry in Borneo, worked as a model in Paris, a journalist in Bangkok, and a human rights researcher in the Middle East, before going to live for a year at a Zen monastery. Finally, she found the answer — with unexpected results. Now a writer about spiritual life in the real world and training to be a counsellor, Mia’s work has been featured in the Guardian, the BBC, The Huffington Post, Time Out, and as Editor to the Buddhist Society. She has an MA in Comparative Literature, three post graduate degrees and a Millennium Award from Jon Snow.
