Karina Chapa speaks to the power of bilingualism and its ability to revolutionize education. In America, over 5 million students speak a language other than English at home, but regardless of the diversity of languages, only 20% of people are bilingual. Karina sheds light on the history of bilingualism in the United States and how we can move forward in today’s educational system.

Karina’s talk also looks into the neural science behind bilingualism and its positive effects on cognitive flexibility, creativity and problem solving skills. Karina Chapa is a courageous bilingual advocate who proudly serves more than 160,000 bilingual students in deep South Texas. She is an Ex-A-Tec originally from Monterrey, Mexico. She is currently the Language Proficiency, Biliteracy and Cultural Diversity Director. She is also the Legislative Chair for the Texas Association for Bilingual Education and the Parliamentarian for RGV-TABE. She has dedicated 18 years of her professional career to empowering bilingual education students, teachers, and administrators in the deep South Texas border. The educational sector in Nigeria is in a precarious state and as such, social change is far-fetched because education is a key driver for social change. There has been a huge disruption in the sector since the emergence of the Covid-19 crisis, which exposed the capitalism in education in Nigeria.
Dr. Mina in her talk questions and addresses the widening infrastructural and technological gaps between private and public institutions. She also addresses the effects of governments failure to mainstream digital learning and initiate an efficient fiscal policy on education in Nigeria.
She affirms that a responsive educational system builds resilient societies. Dr. Mina is a multiple award-winning Development Activist, a Ford Foundation fellow and a certified trainer and facilitator. She has over 20 years’ experience in development facilitation and has supported strategic development activities locally and globally. Shirzad Chamine shows Stanford students how his research on positive intelligence can help them achieve their full potential for professional success and personal fulfillment.

Professor Shirzad Chamine is author of the New York Times bestseller Positive Intelligence. His work exposes 10 well-disguised mental saboteurs and shares how to defeat them. According to Chamine, «positive intelligence» measures the percentage of time our mind serves us as opposed to sabotaging us. While IQ and EQ (emotional intelligence) contribute to our maximum potential, it is PQ that determines how much of that potential we actually achieve. Chamine is chairman emeritus of CTI, the largest coachtraining organization in the world. Chamine has coached hundreds of CEOs and their executive teams. Before running CTI, he was the CEO of an enterprise software company. His background includes PhD studies in neuroscience in addition to a BA in psychology, an MS in electrical engineering and an MBA from Stanford.
