This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. At this talk Camui rocket scientist, Tsutomu Uematsu entices a bold talk of journey to his accomplishments. Full of emotions, laugh and cries he has a humanly way to exploring science.

Tsutomu Uematsu has been fascinated by space since his childhood. He learned fluid mechanics in the university and joined a company designing aircraft in Nagoya. In 1994, he came back to Hokkaido and joined Uematsu Elecetoric Co, managed by his father, Kiyoshi Uematsu. He developed and produced electric magnet used for removing and selecting iron from industrial waste.

Ten years later, his encounter with Prof. Nagata, a researcher of Camui Rocket in Graduate School of Hokkaido University, promised him to give a full support to the rocket research with his love of space. Since then, he has been contributed to four research projects: ‘rocket developments,’ ‘experiments on microgravity,’ which creates the zero-gravity environment like space, ‘developments of a miniaturized satellite,’ and ‘cooperative projects with American private space development corporations.

His main accomplishments are the research and the launch of the artificial satellite “HIT-SAT,” experimental launch of Camui Rocket (reaching 3,500 meter altitude), the cooperative experimental launch with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), a start-up of ARC project, and etc. In 2012, he achieved to reach 7,400 meter altitude on the experimental launch of Camui Rocket 500p.

To give this achievement some context, more people have been to space than have traveled to all 196 sovereign nations and approximately less than 20 of those people are women. As kids now spend more time with entertainment media, theyre getting less and less time outdoors, despite the mental and physical health benefits. Ben Klasky, CEO of IslandWood, a 255-acre outdoor learning center, proposes a free and natural remedy to the physical problems kids face: the Great Outdoors.

Ben grew up in Minnesota where he spent lots of time outdoors. He serves as President and CEO of IslandWood, a nonprofit organization that helps tens of thousands of kids get out into nature. IslandWoods 255-acre headquarters is based on Bainbridge Island, WA, and features some of the most environmentally sustainable buildings in the world. The organization targets low-income, at-risk youth, and introduces them to roar of tree frogs, soaring bald eagles, and star-filled skies, helping them to discover natural connections with the outdoors.

He is the co-founder of Camp Galileo, which has grown into the largest set of day camps in the Bay Area; and he co-founded Board Fellows while earning his MBA and Masters in Education from Stanford. Board Fellows places business school students on nonprofit boards, and the model has been replicated at over 75 other business schools. Ben teaches a graduate class on Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Washingtons Evans School of Public Affairs and a graduate class on Nonprofit Management.

When you tell people that the Coxless Crew set 2 World Records rowing from America to Australia, the first question is not about the journey, but is usually how on earth, as a team of women on a small 29ft boat, did you not throw each other over-board?!

Julia Greer combines different design structures at varying nano-scales to create super strong and super light materials. Her research is changing the landscape of materials available today.

Julia Greer researches lightweight, 3-dimensional nano-architectures and designs experiments to assess their properties and deformation mechanisms. These ‘nano-metamaterials’ have multiple applications, which provide a rich ‘playground’ for fundamental scientific pursuits. Greer, professor of Materials Science at CalTech, has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. She was recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2014. She is also an accomplished concert pianist.

Young British guitarists Mikhail Asanovic and Jake Wright, together known as The Showhawk Duo, started out as buskers and have since gone on to play all over the globe. They have appeared on BBC Radio 1 on the Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show, they performed for the LAD Bible and BBC Radio Bristol. They played at the UKs large festivals including the Main Stage at Bestival, Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Wilderness, Somersault and more. International performances include F1 Grand Prix in Singapore, Seychelles, club tours in Spain, Switzerland and the Netherlands and a 20 — date residency at Pacha in Ibiza.
