Бывший военный Эдди Дикон уже год не может найти работу, поэтому готов взяться за любую. И Эдди повезло: нашлась должность ночного охранника в торговом центре. И в первую же смену начинаются проблемы.

В торговый центр стучится 11-летняя девочка и просит о помощи. Она оказывается важным свидетелем, и должна завтра давать показания в суде. Её преследует банда головорезов, и для них не помеха даже перевозивший девочку бронированный кортеж. Под руководством лидера-психопата преступники действуют без ошибок и не оставляют следов. Эта ночь заставит Эдди вспомнить все то, что он так хотел забыть.

Теперь я побывал и в южной, и в северной Корее. 70 лет назад когда-то единая страна разделилась, и Cеверная Корея вместе с Советским Союзом начала строить социализм, а юг вместе с американцами и западом в целом — капитализм — при чем ни тех ни других корейцев особо не спрашивали — так сложилось исторически — посмотрим, что получилось в итоге.

Thats the question teacher and Synergy Academies Founder Dr. Randy Palisoc asks the TEDxManhattanBeach audience. With only 26% of U.S. twelfth graders proficient in mathematics, Randy shares his solution: teach math as a language. Putting words back into math lessons enables even the youngest school-age minds to grasp complex concepts, such as fractions, that are traditionally thought of as abstract and difficult to understand. In his stunningly simple and effective approach, math no longer creates problems for kids but solves them.

Randy Palisoc is a passionate educator, known for making math easy. A founder of the five-time national award winning Synergy Academies, Randy is proud to identify Synergy as an “in spite of” school. In spite of the fact that its students were disadvantaged and in spite of the fact that it did not have its own facility and had to pack up its classrooms every single week, his school was the first and only elementary school in South Los Angeles to ever win the National Blue Ribbon Award, and was named the #1 Urban Elementary School in America in 2013.

Seeking a broader impact, Randy left Synergy this year to start Ironbox Education. One of the ways he believes we can dramatically improve America’s schools is by doing a better job teaching math to our students in a way that makes sense to them. Randy believes implementing a few changes in the way we approach math will give students the confidence and thinking skills to be more competitive in a global economy.

Dr. Golden shares how men can overcome the pain of emotional abuse.

Timothy J. Golden is Professor of Philosophy, Legal Studies Program Coordinator, and Director of the Donald Blake Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Culture at Walla Walla University. His areas of specialization are 19th and 20th Century European Philosophy, African-American Philosophy/Critical Race Theory, and Philosophy of Religion/Philosophical Theology. He is the author of two books currently under contract and the editor of two other books, also under contract. He teaches courses at WWU in each of his areas of specialization. Dr. Goldens career in academic philosophy is his second career. He has also been a criminal defense lawyer in Philadelphia, Pa. His law degree is from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, and his Ph.D. in philosophy is from the University of Memphis. He enjoys acting and cooking.

There are 2.4 Billion English speakers in the world, and 2 Billion of them learned the language in a classroom. Many say they speak “bad English,” but when 5 times more people speak “bad English” than “good,” how do we decide which language is best?

In this talk, global communication specialist Heather Hansen takes a look at the other side of English, where 2 Billion voices have created a flexible, adaptable and accommodating space for global English communication. What can we learn from the 2 Billion voices when we really listen? What happens when the natives suddenly become the foreigners — not in their own land, but in their own language? For every 1 person born into English, there are 5 who migrate to this language when communicating internationally. On a global scale, this quite literally means
that there are more voices that stand out, than fit in.
