Imagination is not what you think. It’s how you think. Cognitive research reveals that images, metaphors and stories are the basis of our mental operating system: the origin of our intuitions and our irrationality. Counterintuitively, more accurate insights do not come from increasing information or reason, but educating our imagination.

Charles Faulkner is an independent researcher on language and its effects on communication, decision-making and change. He has worked in the Silicon Valley, ‘the City’ of London and 3M, HP, IBM, HSBC and Cargill. His decision-making work is featured in books including The New Market Wizards. His popular works include the audio programs: The New Technology of Achievement, Success Mastery, and Creating Irresistible Influence. His original work on metaphoric communication and change is documented in three programs. He has lectured in 15 countries including at the University of Chicago, Columbia College NYC, the Sorbonne, and London School of Economics.

Attorney Marilyn York owns a Men’s Rights Family Law Firm in Reno Nevada, established in 2001. She and her ten female employees focus on representing men for two reasons: 1. As her talk explains, fathers are crucial in the upbringing and development of their children; and 2. Fathers are the disadvantaged parent in family court and society and while the laws are improving, the statistics are not. There are currently more than 17,000,000 children growing up in America without their fathers and every year this number is growing. According to the Center for Disease Control, children from fatherless homes account for 90% of homeless and runaway children; 71% of high school dropouts and 63% of youth suicides. York is a Mens Rights Divorce Attorney, licensed in California since 1998 and Nevada since 1999, where she is a Certified Family Law Specialist. Since 2001, Marilyn has owned her law firm in Reno, Nevada, where she and her 9 female employees specifically represent men in divorce and family law battles. Marilyn chose her career because of her passion for children and relationships but most of all, Marilyn is driven to help underdogs. While the laws are improving for men, not all laws are yet gender equal and the interpretation and enforcement of those that are, have a long way to go. Despite her focus on representing men, Marilyn has a deep compassion for women in need as well. It isnt lost on Marilyn that women remain disadvantaged outside Family Court. She serves that need as Board President for a local housing program for homeless young women, Nevada Youth Empowerment Project, or NYEP. Anna Ploszajski is an award-winning materials scientist, engineer and communicator, and was
recently made Young Engineer of the Year 2017 by The Royal Academy of Engineering. She
regularly performs stand-up comedy about science, has appeared on national television and
radio, and produces her own podcast about materials called ‘rial talk. She has authored a
chapter on smart materials in Professor Jim Al-Khalili’s new popular science book, What’s
Next?.. Anna Ploszajski is a materials scientist, engineer and communicator, and was recently named Young Engineer of the Year by the Royal Academy of Engineering. She has just finished her engineering doctorate at UCL in hydrogen storage materials, sponsored by industrial partner Cella Energy.
Anna received a First Class Honours degree (MEng) in Materials Science from Oxford University in 2013. During this she won a host of prizes and scholarships from Mansfield College, Rolls-Royce and the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
Anna is a science communicator, regularly performing stand-up comedy with Bright Club and Science Showoff across the country as well as talks to adult and family audiences. She’s a proud member of the Science Showoff Talent Factory, and was a FameLab national finalist in 2017. Seldom does someone possess the ability to connect, at a core level, to impact so many different and varying people. His witty insight into how, and moreover why, people do the things they do is astonishing. Having known Dr. Young for a few years, never have I seen him at a loss for words or searching for an answer. His compassion, his love, and his authentic way of communicating to us exactly what we need to hear and when we need to hear it has profoundly changed my life, and the lives of everyone I’ve witnessed him come in contact with.
