Why learn another language? Words provide us with the ability for connection, empathy and perspective-taking. And when you learn multiple languages you improve your brain, you accelerate your capacity to learn, and you become a better communicator. Vitally, you are also able to step into the world of another human being. To truly understand them and speak to their heart. The question isn’t why should you learn a language, it’s why wouldn’t you. Louka Parry is an award-winning educator and hyperlearner who speaks five languages, holds two Masters degrees and has traveled to over 50 countries. After growing up monolingual in the city of Adelaide, Australia, Louka moved to Europe and uncovered a passion for languages, culture and learning. He returned to Australia to become a teacher and began his career in a very remote Aboriginal community, now working globally to help transform schools and learning. He continues to accumulate languages and advocates for all of us to step into the unknown to grow, connect and thrive. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Ugly Indian is an anonymous collective that does not talk to media, wants no publicity and works with the motto — Only Work No Talk. However, they made an exception for TEDxBangalore so that they could open up the question of why we as Indians are okay with filthy public spaces? The tragedy of the commons — can we change it to the victory of the commons?

Theres a silent revolution brewing in India, and its called The Ugly Indian. It is anonymous, faceless and leaderless, and has seen thousands of citizens coming out to fix local civic problems following a simple motto: Kaam Chalu Mooh Bandh. Only Work No Talk. What started off as a series of social experiments in Bangalore in 2011, to see what it takes to change everyday ugly Indian behaviour in public spaces (littering, spitting paan, public urination and more), has now transformed into a nation-wide movement that is spreading virally – both on social media, and on the ground. The centrepiece of the TUI approach is the spotfix where ugly spots are fixed by citizens. There is no activism, no sloganeering, no lecturing, no finger-pointing and no ideological debates – just a sincere attempt to solve problems by focusing on a spot — using ones own time, hands and money.

Joe Ruhl received his bachelors and masters degrees at Purdue University and he has been sharing the joys of biology with kids for 37 years. He presently teaches Biology, Genetics, and Science Research courses at Jefferson High School in Lafayette, Indiana. Joe and his wife Gail have two children and two grandchildren. The National Association of Biology Teachers named Joe Ruhl the Outstanding Biology Teacher of Indiana in 1987. In 1988 he was awarded a Golden Apple Teaching Award by the Lafayette, Indiana Chamber of Commerce. In 1989 he was honored at the White House as Indiana’s recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching. In 1996 he received the Purdue University College of Science Distinguished Alumnus Award for Excellence in K-12 Science Teaching. In 2004 he was awarded the Purdue College of Education’s Crystal Apple Teaching Award. And in 2012 he was honored with the Shell National Science Teaching Award.

Currently around 63% of students are disengaged at school, meaning that they withdrawal either physically or mentally before they have mastered the skills that are required to flourish in later life. In this talk Scott Bolland explores the science of learning, the mismatch between how we teach and how the brain natural learns, and the important role that artificial intelligence could take in addressing the limitations in our current education system.

Dr Scott Bolland is the founder of New Dawn Technologies, a high-tech software company aiming to revolutionise education through the use of artificial intelligence. He has spent the last 20 years actively researching and teaching in the field of cognitive science – the scientific study of how the mind works – which spans disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, artificial intelligence and computer science. He holds a PhD in this field, as well as a university medal for outstanding academic scholarship.

Tommy Emmanuel created a life for himself as a one-man band and has become one of Australias most respected musicians. With light vim and pure talent, he demonstrates his unique playing style, which is notably a development of the Travis picking technique and blending of rhythm and melody.

In his career, hes played on recordings for Air Supply and Men at Work and in his twenties he joined one of Australias biggest rock acts, Dragon. Now, as a two-time Grammy nominee with a career spanning five decades, he has, for several years, performed over 300 concerts annually. Hes worked with Martin Taylor on a jazz-inspired duet album The Colonel and the Governor. His most recent original material is Little By Little (2011).

Герой выпуска – журналист, телеведущий, писатель Владимир Познер. На встречу с мэтром журналистики пришло много детей из журналистских кружков. Их интересовало, какой видится Познеру журналистика будущего, какие ошибки совершают молодые журналисты, как им предстоит приспосабливаться к реальности, в которой интернет конкурирует с телевидением. Владимир Познер не давал никаких футуристических прогнозов, напротив, заверил детей, что, несмотря на технологические прорывы, профессия журналиста остается неизменной в своей основе. По теории Познера, журналистике нельзя научиться, к ней можно только прийти с жизненным опытом. Лучше всего с таким богатым и наполненным невероятными событиями, как у самого Владимира Владимировича. Познер рассказал, как учил русский язык, какие кошмары мучают его во сне, что он сам считает своими достижениями и чего так и не смог себе простить.
