Osez ! | Stephane Levin | TEDxToulouse

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Stephane Lévin, a famous explorer, embarks us in the many stories and experiences he lived while exploring solo far remote places. He also encourages us to dare to live our dreams.

Stephane is a one of its kind explorator, one of the few remaining today, member of the French Society of Explorators. His explorations are as much geographic as technical, scientific and he puts himself, his body and his skills to the service of research, in a world afraid of risks and progress.

Last year, Colin set two world records: He became the fastest person ever to complete both the Seven Summits (climbing the highest peak on every continent) and the Explorers Grand Slam (the Seven Summits skiing to the last degree of the North and South Poles). He completed the challenges in 131 and 139 days, respectively. His nonprofit, Beyond 7/2, strives to inspire kids to lead active, healthy lives and pursue their biggest dreams.

Get back to nature for good mental health | Caroline Arnold | TEDxRoyalTunbridgeWellsWomen

At a time when the World Health Organisation (WHO) is predicting depression will be the second biggest illness by 2020 — it’s time we took control of our own lives and those of future generations. Caroline presents the evidence on why our disconnection with nature is resulting in us being ‘fish out of water’ and shares the benefits of being outdoors and immersed in the natural world and how this free medicine or therapy – call it what you will — has benefited her and the young people she works alongside.

From an early age, environmental issues, the great outdoors and an interest in the wider world has defined who I am and the choices I have made about my own life and career. My roles have included Director of an environmental charity on the Thames in London, Government Advisor, University Lecturer and Researcher and senior Local Government Manager -working in the areas of sustainability, environment, waste/resource management, and supporting vulnerable people. All of this has culminated in my current role as the Director at Bore Place www.boreplace.org — a not for profit organisation working to connect people with themselves, to each other and the natural world.

Can you learn the hardest language in the world? | Irina Pravet | TEDxOtaniemiED

Irina’s talk at TEDxOtaniemiED is titled ‘Can you learn the hardest language in the world?’ and delves into the increasingly relevant topic of foreign-language speakers learning Finnish. Irina provides examples of unique and interesting yet highly effective methods for learning Finnish — the so-called hardest language in the world.

The talk is illustrated with Sketchnotes by Linda Saukko-Rauta at www.redanredan.fi.

Born in Romania, raised in Canada and now living in Finland, Irina Pravet has been translating herself across cultures and languages for as long as she can remember. She does not believe in the existence of a fixed set of ‘language learning talents’, instead she believes that we all have the ability to succeed in learning a new language by being strategic, having fun and playing with our natural strengths. Currently Irina is a Finnish language

What is love? A journey through the heart | Mia Hansson | TEDxDouglas

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What is love indeed?

Born to parents from two different continents, Mia grew up and worked in Europe, Africa and South East Asia. Even while helping her nuclear physicist father and geneticist mother at work, Mia had a hunch that there was more to life than science alone. Obsessed with finding the answer to the question of love she travelled through Tibet, studied jungle survival with Bruce Parry in Borneo, worked as a model in Paris, a journalist in Bangkok, and a human rights researcher in the Middle East, before going to live for a year at a Zen monastery. Finally, she found the answer — with unexpected results. Now a writer about spiritual life in the real world and training to be a counsellor, Mia’s work has been featured in the Guardian, the BBC, The Huffington Post, Time Out, and as Editor to the Buddhist Society. She has an MA in Comparative Literature, three post graduate degrees and a Millennium Award from Jon Snow.
